The first school for children with a disability started in 1999; this is the Special School for the Deaf in Onuenyim. More than 70 children with hearing impairments attend the school and receive lessons in Sign Language and Speech therapy. All children live in the village, some with foster parents for full integration with the community. In this way many people in the community do understand Sign Language as well. Since 2015 this school is inclusive. 200 children attend the school, 70 of them are hearing impaired.
Four teachers are hearing impaired and understand the importance of Sign Language even better
